Care New England Spine Care

The Care New England Spine Care Program is a patient-centered, primary care-focused pathway that is steeped in the biopsychosocial model. That is, we are focused on getting to know the patient, identifying the biological, psychological and social factors that are contributing to the problem and managing these factors in the simplest, least invasive manner whenever possible.

Our program is an innovative approach to bringing value to spine care.
The formula for value is: Value = quality ÷ cost

Therefore, the Care New England Spine Care Program is designed to bring maximum quality to the care of back and neck pain patients with appropriately judicious use of resources. We do this by applying an evidence-based integrated pathway within which clinical decisions are made regarding diagnosis and management.

The initial encounter in the Care New England Spine Care Program is with a Primary Spine Practitioner (PSP). This is a specially-trained chiropractor who manages the majority of patients without the need for referral. The PSP also identifies the minority of patients who may require further diagnostic investigation or the services of one or more other members of the spine care team. These members include:

  • Physical therapists.
  • Behavioral health specialists - psychologists and social workers.
  • Interventionalists - for injections.
  • Spine surgeons.
  • Opioid management specialists - for patients with opioid dependence and/or hyperalgesia.
  • Acupuncturists.

We employ an evidence-based decision making process where determinations are made as to which team members, if any, the patient needs to see. This ensures that the each patient receives the right care, from the right provider, at the right time. The patient always follows up with the PSP for outcome assessment and to determine next steps in bringing about a rapid and robust recovery. The PSP also continually updates the patient's primary care practitioner and/or referring provider as to the patient’s status and plan.
