  Event Details:  Program Information: Alternatives for Families - Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT),is a treatment approach for families who experience ongoing conflict and use physical coercion/force with children. AF-CBT targets several common risks for, and consequences of, physically coercive and aggressive behavior directed towards children. It can be used with diverse families who present with a range of clinical concerns. This workshop will provide an overview of the core child, caregiver, and family compnents that have been incorporated in AF-CBT. Dr. Kolko will also address treatment approaches with children and their caregivers including parents, foster parents, or other relatives. He will discuss the incorporation of research or evaluation tools to document treatment course and outcome. Common implementation and systemic obstacles to effectively treating these families will also be reviewed. Speaker: David J. Kolko, PhD, ABPP, is a professor of psychiatry, psychology, and pediatrics, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also directs the Special Services Unit at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, a treatment research program for youth referred by the Juvenile Court and Child Welfare, A fellow of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Kolko’s federal and state funding supports the study and treatment of disruptive behavior disorders, childhood fi resetting, juvenile sexual offending, child physical abuse, and adolescent depression. Teaching objectives - participants will: - Learn about the clinical characteristics of physically abused children and treatment outcomes reported in evidence-based treatment literature. - Become familiar with the basic structure, content, and procedures of Alternative for Families-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT). - Learn some of the obstacles to treating families involved in physical abuse and potential ways to overcome these behaviors using an evidence-based intervention.
