More attention than ever is being given to concussion, a traumatic brain injury resulting from a blow or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to move back and forth or twist inside the skull.

The Centers for Disease Control estimate 1.6 to 3.8 million Americans of all ages get a concussion each year during sports and recreational activities like football or soccer. This can temporarily change how their brain cells function and needs to be identified and managed early to help speed recovery and prevent re-injury.

The Care New England Comprehensive Concussion Center is a team-based program you can depend on for the diagnosis, careful management of recovery, and treatment of a concussion. We have assembled all the medical experts, all on the faculty of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, who might need to treat the variety of concussion symptoms and any long-term effects that may result in some cases.

Our concussion team offers:
  • Medical examination and balance testing to evaluate and treat problems seen after concussion.
  • Medication management.
  • Neuropsychological evaluations to assess cognitive changes after concussion and track recovery.
  • Treatment plans to support recovery and manage changes in behavior.
  • Management of step-wise return to sports, school, and/or work.
  • Direct consultation with other medical providers, coaches, athletic trainers, school personnel, and employers to develop and advocate for accommodations and supports.
  • Referrals to appropriate educational, physical therapy and cognitive rehabilitation, behavioral health, and other medical specialists.
  • Educational services for parents, coaches, athletic trainers, schools and other medical care providers on concussion recognition and response.
Team approach

Working together, members of the Comprehensive Concussion Center team evaluate and treat people with concussions within days of the injury. The goal is to allow the brain to heal, manage the impact of concussion on daily life, and prevent re-injury.

We believe individualized treatment is important since concussion symptoms:

  • Vary from one person to the next.
  • Are treated differently, depending on their severity and duration.
