Current Topics in Perinatal Pathology

The Division of Perinatal and Developmental Pathology is a part of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The Division is composed of three full-time pathologists who are certified by the American Board of Pathology with sub-specialty in pediatric pathology; one part-time board-certified pathologist specialized in congenital heart anomalies; and one fellow in pediatric and perinatal pathology (as part of an ACGME-approved training program). The Division combines a busy clinical service with academic/teaching responsibilities and clinical and basic science research.

Clinical Service
The Division provides hospital-based service for examination of placentas and products of conception, as well as comprehensive fetal and neonatal post mortem exams. The Division of Perinatal and Developmental Pathology performs 4,000-5,000 examinations of placentas and products of conception per year, in addition to 200-250 perinatal autopsies. It also provides a consultative service for placentas and post mortem exams for hospitals in southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut.

The Division is an integral part of the multi-disciplinary perinatology team at Women & Infants' Hospital and the Fetal Treatment Program , a joint venture of Women & Infants Hospital and Lifespan - Hasbro Children's / Rhode Island Hospital and New England Medical Center in Boston.

Teaching
As members of the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown Universityfaculty, our Division is actively involved in teaching Brown medical students as well as residents in the Departments of Pathology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Surgery and Pediatrics. Two elective rotations in pediatric pathology is available to Brown medical students contemplating a career in pediatrics or pathology.

The Division offers the Don B. Singer Fellowship in Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, a two-year ACGME accredited fellowship program that incorporates all aspects of clinical and investigative developmental, perinatal and pediatric pathology.

As part of our teaching mission, members of the Division direct or participate in a variety of monthly or bi-monthly interdepartmental conferences, including the Perinatal Clinical-Pathological Conference, the Perinatal Mortality Conference, the Perinatal Pathology Conference, the Perinatal Neuropathology Conference, and the Multidisciplinary Antenatal Diagnosis and Management Conference (M.A.D.A.M.).

Research
The Division members are conducting clinical research projects focusing on various aspects of placental and fetal pathology. Current basic research, involving the molecular regulation of fetal lung development, has been funded by external grants including the American Lung Association.
